International Women’s Day

A little over a week ago Kira and Amanda went to Local First Milwaukee’s event: When Women Lead. The event celebrated women who run their own businesses, and that inspired Kira to learn a little bit more about the woman who runs the company she works for! In light of International Women’s Day, this post focuses on the Founder and CEO of Brew City Marketing, Amanda Dalnodar, and some valuable things she’s taken away from being a leader in business.

Tell me a little bit about your background.

Amanda went to college with the intention of being a teacher. She quickly discovered she wasn’t ready to fill the responsibility of a leadership role, realizing she would need more life experience first. She considers teaching in the future, but at that moment decided to go back to the drawing board. As she was exploring ideas, one of her friends Michelle said she thought Amanda would be great in marketing. The broadness of the industry was appealing to her, as there seemed like there were a lot of opportunities within it to find a good fit. She also ended up taking some extra electives at UW-Milwaukee, one of which was web design, being the only business student in the class at that time.

Another place she gained a lot of her experience was when she was working at a non-profit, MATA Community Media. She was hired as a marketing assistant there where she had free rein to come up with marketing ideas. Her first big project was to redesign their website, giving her project management experience.

What do you like about digital marketing?

She loves small businesses and helping them promote what they do best. They’re great because they have a product that contributes to our society at large, and she likes being able to help them promote what makes them special. She also enjoys working with other marketing professionals and providing opportunities for them to share their gifts and hone in on their goals. It’s fun for her. It feels almost like a big playground where she can provide people with ways to grow in their professional journey.

Have you always wanted to have your own company?

Yes. Looking back she remembers as a little kid she would pretend to own her own store and liked the idea of making things that people wanted to buy.

When Amanda was in high school she spent some time working at a florist shop. There she got to assemble/create floral arrangements and then watch people like them enough to buy them for someone special in their lives. Looking back, those are some of her fondest childhood memories. In college, she won an entrepreneur scholarship by describing those types of experiences in more detail.

It’s so cool you and your husband work together, what is that like?

The business was a creative venture they took together. It’s nice to be able to talk about work together and know where the other person is coming from, to have that common interest. It creates a good bond, and it’s pretty cool to watch the company change and grow and succeed together – just like raising a child – well, kind of.

At the same time, it’s important to know how to create boundaries. Like when to stop talking about work. She noticed she can’t talk about it late at night because it’s too stimulating and there comes a point where you just need to disconnect.

Power struggles can happen through the fact that they both have strong personalities and are very opinionated. It’s all about balance, sticking to your lane and understanding the other person’s position as well.

There are a lot of risks and challenges choosing to work together, and to be able to be a support to each other is gratifying. It’s a huge emotional support system and goes to show that they’re a good team.

Amanda started the business, but she always maintained that they’re like a stool, it needs all 3 legs. Her, Mark, and her brother Danny. Amanda creates the goals, products, the vision of the biz, operations, marketing and takes care of the employees and contractors. Mark focuses on maintaining client relationships, sales, and financials. Dan is all sales. They each play a prominent role, and she knows if she didn’t have their unwavering commitment to succeed alongside her that the company would not have grown at the pace it did.

What major lessons do you feel you have learned in your career?

Knowing that she relies on other people, and giving autonomy to those that help her. How important the people are that you choose to help you. They will make a difference in how the business moves forward, and that it’s up to her to cultivate that.

Amanda likes to think of herself as a vessel for providing people with opportunities and helping small businesses grow. She learned from Katrina Cravey to ask herself first thing in the morning how she can best serve others, and that makes a huge difference in the way she carries out her day. Having that mentality has been life-changing.

Do you have any mentors that helped shape a path for you?

Her Aunt Donna, she is the president of a prominent photography and video studio in Appleton, Image Studios. Amanda can always turn to her with personal business questions and watching her success has been very inspiring for her.

Her accountant, Mike Sargent, is another person that’s always there for her. He’s a wealth of business knowledge and someone she can rely on to help her talk through things and give her good advice.

And her mom, Carol. She has really good energy, outgoing and friendly to everyone she meets. She always gives Amanda her best honest answer. She cuts to the facts, but with empathy and a higher perspective.

What would you consider your biggest failure?

She wishes that when she was younger she would have listened to her body more. She was so consumed with the business and too ‘all up in her head’ that she didn’t take enough breaks to take care of her body – which led to anxiety, TMJ, and loss of mobility in her shoulders.

She’s been working with a personal trainer, Tina Johnson, for the past year to correct her posture and gain muscle mass. She also enjoys yoga and just discovered her love of cardio kickboxing. It’s awesome to be passionate about your work but it’s equally important to take care of your physical self.

What are your goals for the future?

Her goals for the future are to continue to find healthy ways to relax and destress. Running a business, being a mom, and wife can be all-consuming. She realizes that life isn’t going to slow down anytime soon so she needs to be consistent about decompressing on a daily basis – even if it’s as simple as closing her eyes for 20 minutes during the day.

Her goal for Brew City Marketing is to continually make it an even better place to work for the employees. Also to keep the digital marketing products and service agile and custom while we grow. That’s the best thing for our clients and that’s what made us a success in the first place. All of our initiatives and goals tie back to that principle.

It was awesome to delve more into the life of our lady boss, Amanda Dalnodar, in honor of International Women’s Day. Read more about the team that makes up Brew City Marketing here!

Our Easy Privacy Policy Solution

If your business has its own website you’ll want to make sure you have a sturdy Privacy Policy. This is a precaution that protects you and your potential customers as well. Many small businesses aren’t aware that they are required to have a policy. Keep reading for the main reasons why everyone needs a Privacy Policy and how Brew City Marketing can help!

It’s Required by Law if the Website Collects Personally Identifiable Info (PII)

Does your site ask visitors to fill out a contact sheet or sign up for a newsletter? Any form that requires a person to provide their name, email, and/or phone number is considered PII. Each state has its own set of laws surrounding this issue with fines that can reach $2,500-$7,500 per website visitor. Do you know your state’s laws? You can find those details at this link.

Your Privacy Policy Helps Your Sales

Many people have experienced a breach of privacy by signing up for something online. Because of this, folks are paying closer attention to how their info is being used. If your Privacy Policy is prominent and sturdy, customers are more likely to deem you trustworthy enough to buy your product.

Many Helpful Internet Tools Require It

If you aren’t using it already, you will find a great tool in Google Analytics. It helps website owners view their traffic, how those people found you, and what the most popular pages on your site are. This tool, amongst other prominent advertising tools, requires you to have a Privacy Policy.

How We Can Help

Some choose to write their own, but keeping up with it can easily fall to the wayside. The Privacy Policy generator we have partnered with will automatically update your website policies whenever laws specific to your state change. If you’re interested in having us set up your Privacy Policy, we are ready to help! Reach out to our team here and we will start the simple process for you.

How to Recharge a Tired Online Marketing Campaign

At least once a week, we hear from a business owner who used to get results from their online marketing campaigns but can’t seem to generate leads, sales, or walk-in visits anymore. Eventually, they call us because they want to know what happened. More importantly, they want to know what can be done to move in the right direction.

Every business and situation is different, of course, but recharging a tired online marketing campaign almost always involves a handful of steps. In this article, we’re going to look at a few of the most common ones, one-by-one. Here is how you can start turning things around…

Understand the Problem

You can’t find solutions until you understand the challenges in front of you. That’s why at Brew City Marketing we often advise our clients to let us audit their existing websites. We study things like traffic patterns, search engine positioning, and technical coding to create a benchmark. Often, this one step will give us important insights into the real issues affecting their web presence.

See Things from a Buyer’s POV

If customers are no longer responding to your pages, messages, and campaigns, try looking at things from their point of view. Ask yourself what they would want or expect from a company like yours. See if you can figure out whether you’re delivering that on your website. In some situations, there might be a fundamental disconnect between what you’re promoting and what the market is seeking.

Try Something New

It’s easy to become stagnant in any area of your business, particularly if what you’ve done in the past has always worked. However, in the digital age, you should always be experimenting with new ways of attracting traffic from Google, advertising customers, or utilizing social media. In other words, if you aren’t growing you’re falling, so don’t be afraid to try new things.

Don’t Look for Quick-Fix Solutions

It’s, unfortunately, the case that business owners and executives will often make a bad situation worse by trying to find quick-fix solutions to their online marketing problems. By following fads and gimmicks, you just put off the inevitable investment of time or money that will eventually have to be made, all while falling behind your competitors in the process.

Start Getting Better Advice

Ideally, you would never reach a point where your online marketing campaigns need to be recharged. You would have a team of creative professionals monitoring your website and your business results. So, if it suddenly seems like you need to catch up just to match old levels of performance, that might be a good sign that you should start seeking out new advice.

Need Help Sorting Out Your Website and Online Marketing Strategy?

It can be difficult to find a winning formula on the internet, particularly if you aren’t sure why your website stopped working for you. Why not let the experts help you breathe new life into your e-commerce, lead generation, or local online marketing campaigns?

Contact our team today to set up a free consultation and let us show you exactly what we can do!

WP Engine Summit 2019: What You Need to Know!

Amanda & Heather from Brew City Marketing travel to the WP Engine Summit 2019 in Austin

When Brew City Marketing president, Amanda Dalnodar, and SEO manager, Heather Dorsey, headed to Austin, Texas this past summer to attend the WP Engine Summit 2019, there were a few things they knew for sure:

Amanda Dalnodar & Heather Dorsey Brew City Marketing

  1. It was going to be hot. Like really hot. And humid.
  2. The 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats that live under the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge were less than a half-mile away from the Fairmont Hotel, the venue hosting WP Engine’s 4th annual summit. Since bats eat mosquitos, this was very reassuring for evening outdoor events.
  3. They were going to learn some really cool things from industry visionaries, by attending sessions on new trends, technologies, inspiring brand campaigns, and new WP Engine features.

WP Engine knows what businesses need

Monica Cravotta, vice president of product marketing, wasted no time in jumping right in to announce why WP Engine is the partner of choice for 4500+ agencies worldwide.

With a strong belief that customer service is everything, they build their products to help people “win at their jobs.” From technical developers to administrators, brand marketers and media publishers, WP Engine’s goal is to “be the most relied upon the platform for powering digital experiences built on WordPress.”

With that in mind, WP Engine has four pillars in its platform:

  1. Creative Agility – because our most valued commodity is time. Customers want a convenient, efficient experience. WP Engine has developed tools and customizable page-building blocks to help design and manage a site that makes the most sense for how users navigate your site.
  2. Ecosystem Integration – Monica and her team believe that developers need the flexibility of open source and curated solutions.
  3. Enterprise Performance – Three seconds. That’s all you have for your website page to load before 53% of your mobile customers leave your site and search elsewhere. And once you’ve got someone on your site, you better protect their data. Cloud and security solutions drive WP Engine, which as blocked over 10 billion cyberattacks so far in 2019.
  4. Actionable Intelligence – From page speed and content diagnostics to application performance monitoring, WP Engine is always seeking continuous improvement.

Developers say they want to iterate faster and experiment safely. Marketers want a platform they can navigate independently. WP Engine wants to simplify, allowing its customers to work smarter not harder. WP Engine is redesigning their user portal to make it easier for users to manage multiple accounts and sites. This is all good news for us—and our clients—here at Brew City Marketing!

WP Engine Summit 2019 main speakers

After Monica kicked things off, a powerhouse of brainpower took the main stage to educate, enlighten and entertain the packed house. Here’s a breakdown of some of the speakers and what they had to say:

Dr. Chris Brauer, director of innovation – Goldsmiths, University of London, discussed the value of AI in digital experiences. Through extensive research, Dr. Brauer and his team determined that 84.5%  of enterprises surveyed indicated they used AI to create emotionally evocative experiences for their users.

Many people use AI and fail. How come? Dr. Brauer says developers are so busy using sophisticated techniques that they neglect keeping people front and center. Companies need to keep in mind how humans work.

Consumers what informative and meaningful interactions. Put information first and provide emotional interaction to obtain optimal results.

Chris Broomall, SVP & group head, development technology, Edelman, spoke about the importance of trust and reputation and how technology has to support those values. When a company such as Volkswagen was said to have cheated on diesel emissions—prompting a huge recall of over 83,000 3-liter diesel vehicles—that’s a lot of users heading to their site, overnight. That’s huge. You need a secure site with the infrastructure to support good user experience.

Jason Cohen, Founder, and CTO, WP Engine. Did you know that 34% of the web is now powered by WordPress? There’s a reason it’s our go-to platform here at BCM. This past April online shopping overtook brick and mortar retail for the first time ever. Hello Amazon Prime! Almost 46% of global traffic is from smartphones. Trying to keep up? If you don’t create a personalized experience, you don’t stand a chance.

Andrew Lindsay, VP corporate & business dev., HubSpot, shared “How to develop and spin an Integrated Customer Growth Cycle.” The old sales funnel of doing traditional marketing to get customers doesn’t work anymore.

According to Andres, to get and retain customers today you need to attract, delight and engage. And you need to do this via the customer’s choice of communication mode whether that be through your website, email, Facebook Messenger, contact us form, live chat, or any of the other eight-way of communicating (including Twitter, phone, a blog and more)!

Mary Ellen Dugan, WP Engine, CMO, hosted one of the most entertaining sessions of WP Engine Summit 2019 when she hosted several Generation Zs (born 1996 or later) on stage to discuss how they use the Internet.

Some interesting statistics WP Engine’s research uncovered about their digital experiences and expectations.

  • WP Engine Summit 2019 Millennial Panel.66% of Gen Z believe websites will know what you are looking for before you tell them.
  • 50% of Gen Z say they would stop visiting a website if it did not anticipate what they need, liked, or wanted.
  • 55% of Gen Z can’t last more than 5 hours without the Internet.
  • 84% of actual customers in their ads.
  • 44% of Gen Z will provide data to prioritize a personalized experience over privacy, compared to 22% of Boomers.

That last statistic is huge. If you provide them with the experience they are looking for, they will give you private information. As a one-panel participant said, though, you need to be authentic. It bothers them when companies act hip by using what they consider to be cool phrases kids use. Be your own brand, don’t pretend, she said.

Why Should Milwaukee Small Businesses Choose a Milwaukee Web Design Company?

Blog2_OctAs web-savvy internet marketers, we understand the allure of tapping a global marketplace to meet your business needs. But, as business owners ourselves, we also recognize that sometimes it’s better to source your services from your local economy rather than trying to outsource it online.

If you’re a Milwaukee business owner in the market for a new website, consider this:

  • A Milwaukee web design company will know your market, intimately.
A good web site speaks through colors, words, and myriad other design elements that resonate with its target audience. When you choose a web designer who actually lives and breathes in your market, those design elements are much more likely to hit the target.
  • Supporting local businesses puts money into the local economy.
Why is that important? Because putting money into the local economy in which your business does business inevitably ends up meaning more business for your business one way or another.
  • Supporting local businesses supports entrepreneurship.
If you’re a business owner, you’re an entrepreneur. So, you already understand the value of entrepreneurship and the benefits that it creates. When you support local businesses, you support hard-working, risk-taking people just like yourself who are making Milwaukee a stronger, better place to live and do business.
  • As Milwaukee web designers, we’ll be here when you need us.
When you do business with people who are three states (or nations) away, it’s easy for them to hide when there’s a problem. But when you do business with people who are just three miles away, well, it gets a little harder for them to pretend they’re not around. If you have a problem, you’ll know exactly how and where to find us.
  • Because sometimes you need face time.
The quality and dependability of a website can make or break a small business. And good websites don’t come cheap. Are you really ready to take a risk on something that important with someone you’ve never met? It may sound cliche, but there’s no substitute for talking to someone face-to-face to both explain your needs and get a feeling for what they’re about.

Does your business need a new website or refresh? Call us at 414-208-0700 or fill out our contact form today for a free consultation.

From Myanmar to Milwaukee — Website Design for World Travelers

With dozens of biking trips and thousands of miles under their wheels, Peter and Sally Blommer knew that sharing their long history of two-wheeled world travel wouldn’t be easy. Having bicycled everywhere from Cuba to Cambodia (and seemingly everywhere in between!), they wanted a new website that made it easier for friends and visitors to see where they’d been and which trips they liked best. They came to Brew City Marketing because they knew they had a lot of content that wasn’t well organized, making it hard for visitors to navigate and find information.

How Brew City Marketing helped:

  • Easy-to-use WordPress content management allows the Blommers to edit their website on their own.
  • Our new website design gives their site a new, fresh look.
  • Our content reorganization makes their site easier to navigate and use.
  • New review/rating functionality ranks trips and makes it easy for visitors to find the trips the Blommers liked best.
  • New real-time geo-location integration allows the Blommers to share real-time trip information.

With a bright, streamlined look and cool, new functionality, their Ride the Road website is easy to use, offers loads of interesting and helpful info for bike travelers, and ranks their bike trips for easy-to-find traveling information. Better yet, new functionality for geo-location allows them to show folks exactly where they are on any given road trip. What’s the point of riding the road if you’re not sharing it with friends, right?

Visit Ride the Road yourself, and see how we’re helping the Blommers share their love for pedaling around the world.

See what else our Milwaukee web design team is working on. And, if you like what you see, give us a call—we’d love to help you make the most of your website too!

When Was the Last Time You Backed Up Your Website?

Milwaukee Web and WordPress Hosting GraphicDo you back up your own website? How long has it been since you backed it up? If you can’t remember, it may be time to rethink how you’re maintaining it.

Once your business website is built and the “hard” work is done, it’s easy to think that everything else can now run on automatic. Unfortunately, for small and large business owners alike, that’s not really the case. In today’s world of ever-evolving technology, security threats, and rapid-fire software changes, there will always be the need for ongoing website maintenance, which means there will always be a reason to back up your site.

Regardless of what business you’re in, if you use a website to reach and connect with your customers, losing it can be disastrous. All it takes is for one virus, one hacker, one crash or server meltdown to erase all of the coding and data that constitute your website. That’s the public face of your company, so if it disappears for some reason, you (quite literally!) lose face.

Here’s the Risk

Just think: In a matter of seconds, your business could go from a trustworthy service with a robust website with customer testimonials, service listings and offers, to de facto anonymity.

Sure, that’s not necessarily a security issue (unless, of course, you equate financial security with website security, which maybe you should!), but it’s definitely a customer service issue.

If it’s been awhile since you last backed up your site, it may be time to roll up your sleeves and git ‘er done.

What to Back Up

If you’re maintaining your website yourself and this is your first time backing it up, make sure that you back up both your database and all of your other files. (So, you’ll need everything: the core installation files, plugins, theme, JavaScript and PHP scripts, image files, and everything else.)

Basically, if you forget any little nugget of precious content or formatting information, you could end up with a website that is broken, missing information or only partially functional if you have to use your backup files to restore it. So, you want to make sure that you get everything.

How Often to Back Up

How often you should back up your site really depends on how dynamic your site is. For instance, a nice WordPress site that uses customized themes and plugins will need more frequent updating than a static website, but it also won’t benefit from incremental security updates and usability updates. (And, as any web designer or coder can tell you: incremental updates are much less painful and time-consuming in the long run.)

Regardless of what your site looks like or how it’s created, to be safe, you should back it up at least every time a change is made, whether that’s to the content, the design, or something behind the scenes. This, at least, will protect you from losing what you have.

If you don’t have the time or technical skills to back up your business website, we can help. As a full-service web design agency, we offer fully managed hosting and backup services for WordPress websites.

WordPress Security Management

A surprisingly high number of business owners and executives hardly ever think about WordPress hosting and security. After all, they rationalize, they don’t have access to million-dollar accounts or customer credit card numbers… they couldn’t possibly have to worry about sophisticated cyber crimes.

That’s understandable, but it also isn’t the way WordPress security works. In fact, smaller websites and blogs have more to worry about than other sites, not less, because most thieves and hackers aren’t looking for a huge payout – they are looking for an easy target.

In many cases, they aren’t trying to steal actual money, but rather to hijack your website or install malicious code. That makes WordPress security something you should pay serious attention to. Luckily, there are a few quick and easy steps you can take to help protect your site:

1. Back up everything, and back it up often.

Even without someone intentionally trying to wreck your site, it’s easy to accidentally lose all of your content, including posts and images, during an update or server crash. For that reason, everything on your WordPress site should be backed up frequently.

2. Don’t leave the front door wide open.

If you’re using usernames like “admin,” or passwords that resemble “password” or “1234,” then now is the time to make a change. These kinds of oversights are invitations to thieves, and amongst the biggest reasons that WordPress sites are commonly hacked.

3. Remember that updates and patches are recommended for a reason.

The great thing about WordPress, as a platform, is that it’s so popular. When someone discovers a security hole, developers work to close it quickly. You can only take advantage, however, if you update and patch your site as necessary (or have a business web designer do it for you).

4. Don’t ignore your WordPress site.

Often, the first way you can tell something is wrong with your site is by taking a quick look at it. If you never scan your own posts and pages, you might be the last to know that you have a security problem.

5. Sign up for periodic reviews and updates.

And finally, it’s a good idea to have a business web design and online marketing team look through your site once in a while – both to assess the security, and to see if your web business is growing as quickly as it should be.

Naturally, it helps to have the right business web design and Internet marketing team on your side when it comes to protecting your WordPress site. But, by following these five tips, you can put in a good “first line of defense” that will help you prevent the most common kinds of WordPress security problems.

Call or email Brew City Marketing today to see how we can help you grow your web presence and make your business more profitable.
