Brew City Marketing Gives Back to Veterans & the Starfish Foundation

Now that we’re almost halfway through the first quarter of 2021, it’s time to give back to the community. For those familiar with our company, Brew City Marketing donates time and funds to charities every quarter. We are constantly thinking of ways to make the lives of others better any way we can. This month, for Valentine’s Day, Brew City Marketing is donating to the Starfish Foundation! You may be asking though: What exactly is the Starfish Foundation? Put simply, they provide funds to veterans who can’t afford to take part in the Taking It Lightly and Renewal Programs for emotional healing and trauma recovery. Their mission is to “assist emotional trauma survivors to release their grief, rage, and shame; and allow joy, productivity, and prosperity back into their and their families’ lives.” In the section below, we’ll explain how the Starfish Foundation set out to achieve its goals.

The Starfish Foundation Helps At-Risk Veterans

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, around 11-20% of veterans who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom are diagnosed with PTSD in any given year. This is a staggering number. PTSD is a serious condition that can negatively impact the person’s (and their family’s) life. Common symptoms include intrusive memories, negative changes in thinking and mood, and changes in emotional reaction. To ensure these veterans receive the care they deserve, the Starfish Foundation helps raise money so veterans can seek additional therapy. They’ve partnered with the Healing Warrior Hearts foundation—a charity that specializes in healing wounded warriors.

In addition to partnering with similar charities, the Starfish Foundation offers therapeutic retreats, sponsorships, scholarships, and grants for veterans. Through their partnerships, veterans are able to attend and participate in various forms of emotional healing; all donations help fund these initiatives (and many of them are run by volunteers!). These efforts are incredibly important. Unfortunately, suicidality among veterans is common and on the rise. By supporting charitable causes that seek to help veterans combat their trauma, you’ll be doing your part to help increase awareness and raise the funds necessary to support these veterans who are in such desperate need.

How You Can Help Wounded Warriors

If you’d like to lend a helping hand to veterans in need, you should definitely consider reaching out to the Starfish Foundation. Every day, our troops provide a service that we often take for granted, and their sacrifice is immeasurable. As the saying goes, all gave some; some gave all. Giving back in any way possible is a beautiful gesture, which is why we at Brew City Marketing take charitable giving so seriously. There are numerous ways to help, and every little bit helps. We hope that you’ll consider donating in the way that makes the most sense for you and your family. Click here to learn how to give back to our veterans today! Or, to learn more, you can always contact our friendly staff to ask about our ongoing charitable efforts.

Giving Back to the Community: Holiday Volunteering at Milwaukee Rescue Mission

This year has been incredibly different and difficult for many families. Unfortunately, for some, this year has fundamentally changed their lives (not necessarily for the better in the short term). Right now, giving back to the community is more important than ever. Millions of people have lost their jobs due to COVID-19 concerns. Companies all over Milwaukee have shut their doors, and more and more families find themselves in desperate need of aid. Milwaukee is a strong city with even stronger people. This year, Brew City Marketing has made an extra effort to support our beautiful, vibrant community. Over the last few months, we’ve hosted jacket-donation and book-donation drives. We’ve also hosted food drives and have donated time and resources to other charitable causes. For this holiday season, we chose to volunteer at the Milwaukee Rescue Mission.

What is the Milwaukee Rescue Mission?

The Milwaukee Rescue Mission (MRM) provides a variety of services to those in need. On a regular basis, the MRM serves underprivileged folks with hot and healthy meals. In fact, they donate 304,000 meals and 72,000 articles of clothing to those in dire need every year. Additionally, the MRM gives homeless children excellent education opportunities. These programs provide each student with a broad base of knowledge and skills, which places them in a better position to succeed as they grow into young adults. Overall, the MRM is committed to serving those in our community who need the most help. Their mission is as noble as it is effective, so it was a pleasure to work with them.

During these trying times, it is completely understandable that not everyone can donate money. And, due to COVID-19, volunteering in-person might not be an option for you. Regardless of your circumstance, it’s incredibly important to think about those who are not as fortunate as ourselves. Charitable giving is as heartwarming as it is life-changing. So, if you’re thinking about giving back to your community, consider looking through their website for more information about volunteer work and donation opportunities.

How Did Brew City Marketing Lend a Helping Hand?

The team at Brew City Marketing arrived at the MRM facility on Tuesday with a mission. We wanted to help make families’ Christmas memorable! So we rolled up our sleeves, put on our masks, and went to town. After we went through our COVID screening process, we were led to a room filled with Christmas presents. That’s not all, though: there were boxes upon boxes of blankets, thermal socks, winter hats, and bundles of necessities for families of all sizes. Every toy, every blanket, and every piece of winter clothing was donated by an individual from the community. It’s not every day that you get to see how generous the community is (in a tangible way). The whole team was blown away by the display of kindness—it was truly an amazing experience.

After our host gave us the rundown, our team split off into pairs and put together Christmas packages. Each pair received a handful of lists that gave us information about a specific family. We then picked out presents for the kids, winter clothes for the parents, and an extra gift for mom! We then wrapped each of the presents (some of us were better at wrapping presents than others!) and set them aside for delivery. At the end of the day, we collectively made packages for over fifteen families. We left feeling wonderful about our volunteer work, and we are grateful to have had a hand in making someone’s Christmas a bit more merry. Giving back to the community is something we love to do, but this outing was really special.

How Can I Help Contribute to My Community?

If this story has given you a bit more holiday cheer, and if you’re thinking about donating time or funds to a great cause, there are many ways to volunteer at the Milwaukee Rescue Mission. The holidays are great, but this year’s holiday season is one like no other. If you are able to contribute in any way, now is the time to do so. Giving back to your community enriches everyone’s life, and it’s what keeps Milwaukee strong. So consider volunteering your time and energy for a beautiful cause—you won’t regret it!

Keeping Your Clients Informed through COVID-19 Safety Guidelines

Do you have a COVID policy posted on your website for your business clientele? If not, we can write one and add it to your homepage for you!

So much has changed since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Despite state and local efforts, it does not look like the pandemic will conclude anytime soon; in fact, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, cases of COVID-19 in Wisconsin are once again on the rise. As we enter flu season in general, it is now more important than ever to make sure that your business is adhering to a strict code of safety standards to protect the health of your colleagues, business partners, families, and friends. That said, business needs to continue, and being prepared to walk clients through your business’ COVID-19 safety measures is an effective way to provide your clients peace of mind when conducting business at your facility. In the digital age, the easiest way for a client to find out more about your business’ policies is through your landing page. If you are looking to add a statement to your website, Brew City Marketing will handle your landing page needs and write a statement for you!

Not Sure What to Include? We Can Help.

It can be daunting to put together a plan of action for working through a pandemic; after all, none of us have ever had to do this. Fortunately, Brew City Marketing can help you and your business draft a set of guidelines and restrictions for operating a safe workspace in the era of COVID. Due to Governor Evers’ state mask-mandate, most people are aware of mask policies and proper mask usage, but the finer details can be difficult to navigate, for example:

  • What kind of masks are the most effective?
  • Why are some masks more effective than others?
  • Does everyone have to wear a mask all of the time?
  • How can you be sure your work environment is safe for employees and guests?

Similarly, news reports indicate that the virus spreads itself through sneezing and coughing, but there are more factors to take into consideration to mitigate the chances of harmful viral spread. Brew City Marketing has implemented its own strict set of guidelines, and we would be more than happy to help draft guidelines or press releases for you so that you can conduct business (almost) as usual without having to worry about drafting an intricate plan of your own.

Check Out Brew City’s COVID Policy Here:

If your business, high volume or otherwise, needs a plan of action sooner rather than later, send an email to our Project Manager, April for more information about our COVID-19 related services. We know how difficult this time has been for everyone, and we want to do what we can to set you and your customers’ minds at ease—implementing a strong, science-informed plan is one of many steps we can take together to ensure that everyone stays safe and in business. If you have any additional questions or concerns about how we can help, contact our awesome team at Brew City Marketing today!

Tips & Takeaways for Week 5 of COVID-19 Quarantine

As we continue to push forward and help our clients with this unprecedented circumstance, we wanted to share some key points we took away from our clients that are doing well during quarantine. Take this list with you and maybe it will help inspire you to approach Monday with a fresh and confident plan of attack!

  1. Provide full disclosure to your client base whether you’re still open or closing.

  1. Remember local businesses are the leaders of our communities. Show your support by providing positive, honest information that gives our communities hope for a fearless and productive existence.

  1. Tackle major website updates or other larger digital projects. Get out ahead of your competition while you have time to be more thoughtful.

  1. Get really good at providing online and phone customer service. Keep them informed by making sure your messaging clearly communicates what your store hours and policies will be moving forward.

  1. Work on your website, SEO, and social media as many normally find it hard to make time for these things. This is the perfect opportunity to turn a difficult situation into a productive one.

  1. When things slow down most successful companies do not stop marketing, they push it. When everyone else is cutting back, it’s the perfect opportunity to move forward.

  1. Working with clients during this time is more about lending them an ear so they can vent their newfound worries and frustrations. Not only does this help give them peace of mind, but it gives you a chance to re-examine their situation and identify new pain points, which can then be addressed with a specific strategy. COVID-19 may be a great opportunity to start building those bridges and taking those client relationships to the next level.

  1. Boost your brand presence and optimize your website. Yes, leads may be low right now – but hopefully, customers will remember who you are and what you do when this is over and a sense of normality is returning.

  1. Update your website, create those standard operating procedures (SOPs), improve your sales process, look for contractors.

  1. If this is a big blow to you, figure out ways to prevent this big blow from ever happening again by diversifying and embracing new technology.

It’s great to see how businesses are taking this challenge during quarantine and turning it into an opportunity to grow. As always, please let us know if we can assist in any way.

Stay safe and strong, Milwaukee!

International Women’s Day

A little over a week ago Kira and Amanda went to Local First Milwaukee’s event: When Women Lead. The event celebrated women who run their own businesses, and that inspired Kira to learn a little bit more about the woman who runs the company she works for! In light of International Women’s Day, this post focuses on the Founder and CEO of Brew City Marketing, Amanda Dalnodar, and some valuable things she’s taken away from being a leader in business.

Tell me a little bit about your background.

Amanda went to college with the intention of being a teacher. She quickly discovered she wasn’t ready to fill the responsibility of a leadership role, realizing she would need more life experience first. She considers teaching in the future, but at that moment decided to go back to the drawing board. As she was exploring ideas, one of her friends Michelle said she thought Amanda would be great in marketing. The broadness of the industry was appealing to her, as there seemed like there were a lot of opportunities within it to find a good fit. She also ended up taking some extra electives at UW-Milwaukee, one of which was web design, being the only business student in the class at that time.

Another place she gained a lot of her experience was when she was working at a non-profit, MATA Community Media. She was hired as a marketing assistant there where she had free rein to come up with marketing ideas. Her first big project was to redesign their website, giving her project management experience.

What do you like about digital marketing?

She loves small businesses and helping them promote what they do best. They’re great because they have a product that contributes to our society at large, and she likes being able to help them promote what makes them special. She also enjoys working with other marketing professionals and providing opportunities for them to share their gifts and hone in on their goals. It’s fun for her. It feels almost like a big playground where she can provide people with ways to grow in their professional journey.

Have you always wanted to have your own company?

Yes. Looking back she remembers as a little kid she would pretend to own her own store and liked the idea of making things that people wanted to buy.

When Amanda was in high school she spent some time working at a florist shop. There she got to assemble/create floral arrangements and then watch people like them enough to buy them for someone special in their lives. Looking back, those are some of her fondest childhood memories. In college, she won an entrepreneur scholarship by describing those types of experiences in more detail.

It’s so cool you and your husband work together, what is that like?

The business was a creative venture they took together. It’s nice to be able to talk about work together and know where the other person is coming from, to have that common interest. It creates a good bond, and it’s pretty cool to watch the company change and grow and succeed together – just like raising a child – well, kind of.

At the same time, it’s important to know how to create boundaries. Like when to stop talking about work. She noticed she can’t talk about it late at night because it’s too stimulating and there comes a point where you just need to disconnect.

Power struggles can happen through the fact that they both have strong personalities and are very opinionated. It’s all about balance, sticking to your lane and understanding the other person’s position as well.

There are a lot of risks and challenges choosing to work together, and to be able to be a support to each other is gratifying. It’s a huge emotional support system and goes to show that they’re a good team.

Amanda started the business, but she always maintained that they’re like a stool, it needs all 3 legs. Her, Mark, and her brother Danny. Amanda creates the goals, products, the vision of the biz, operations, marketing and takes care of the employees and contractors. Mark focuses on maintaining client relationships, sales, and financials. Dan is all sales. They each play a prominent role, and she knows if she didn’t have their unwavering commitment to succeed alongside her that the company would not have grown at the pace it did.

What major lessons do you feel you have learned in your career?

Knowing that she relies on other people, and giving autonomy to those that help her. How important the people are that you choose to help you. They will make a difference in how the business moves forward, and that it’s up to her to cultivate that.

Amanda likes to think of herself as a vessel for providing people with opportunities and helping small businesses grow. She learned from Katrina Cravey to ask herself first thing in the morning how she can best serve others, and that makes a huge difference in the way she carries out her day. Having that mentality has been life-changing.

Do you have any mentors that helped shape a path for you?

Her Aunt Donna, she is the president of a prominent photography and video studio in Appleton, Image Studios. Amanda can always turn to her with personal business questions and watching her success has been very inspiring for her.

Her accountant, Mike Sargent, is another person that’s always there for her. He’s a wealth of business knowledge and someone she can rely on to help her talk through things and give her good advice.

And her mom, Carol. She has really good energy, outgoing and friendly to everyone she meets. She always gives Amanda her best honest answer. She cuts to the facts, but with empathy and a higher perspective.

What would you consider your biggest failure?

She wishes that when she was younger she would have listened to her body more. She was so consumed with the business and too ‘all up in her head’ that she didn’t take enough breaks to take care of her body – which led to anxiety, TMJ, and loss of mobility in her shoulders.

She’s been working with a personal trainer, Tina Johnson, for the past year to correct her posture and gain muscle mass. She also enjoys yoga and just discovered her love of cardio kickboxing. It’s awesome to be passionate about your work but it’s equally important to take care of your physical self.

What are your goals for the future?

Her goals for the future are to continue to find healthy ways to relax and destress. Running a business, being a mom, and wife can be all-consuming. She realizes that life isn’t going to slow down anytime soon so she needs to be consistent about decompressing on a daily basis – even if it’s as simple as closing her eyes for 20 minutes during the day.

Her goal for Brew City Marketing is to continually make it an even better place to work for the employees. Also to keep the digital marketing products and service agile and custom while we grow. That’s the best thing for our clients and that’s what made us a success in the first place. All of our initiatives and goals tie back to that principle.

It was awesome to delve more into the life of our lady boss, Amanda Dalnodar, in honor of International Women’s Day. Read more about the team that makes up Brew City Marketing here!
