Brew City Marketing is sponsoring the 7th annual Laura’s Smile Mile being held on June 1, 2013 on Milwaukee’s lakefront at Veterans Park.
Last summer, Brew City Marketing owners Mark and Amanda Dalnodar were just two of nearly a hundred volunteers working as support personnel to help set up, stage and manage the record breaking event. Besides the 5K run, the event includes a 2 Mile Walk, a children’s run, bouncy houses, cupcake decorating, live music, raffles, refreshments, and more. They were joined by hundreds of runners, walkers, and families with participants representing from 15 states spanning the East to West coast. The event is sponsored by the Laura’s Smile Foundation and the Wisconsin Ovarian Cancer Society.
Originally created to honor the beautiful spirit, faith and unforgettable smile of Laura David, an ovarian cancer victim who passed away in 2011 at age 30, Laura’s Smile Foundation continues to educate and advocate issues concerning ovarian cancer.
Brew City Marketing owners Mark and Amanda have a personal connection to the fundraiser as well as community ties: Laura’s husband, Mark David, is a close friend. “It is a disease with such subtle symptoms, most women ignore speaking to their doctor until unfortunately the cancer has progressed to stage where survival rates greatly diminish,” says Amanda. The five year survival rate for women diagnosed with this disease is only 43% vs. 90% for breast cancer. The low survival rate is mainly due to lack of awareness of the symptoms and a reliable method of early detection. Approximately only 15% of ovarian cancer patients are diagnosed in the early stages.
Laura’s Smile Foundation, officially created in 2010 as a 501(c)(3) charity by Laura’s sister-in-law Denielle Beilfuss and her friends Michele Buchicchio and Cassie Simpson, is dedicated to leading the movement towards ovarian cancer awareness. They are committed to raising non-profit funds to continuing the battle against ovarian cancer through education, advocacy and research. All activities are devoted to providing support, hope and honor to those whom have been affected by ovarian cancer.
