Time for Spring Cleaning!

Did you know a whopping 91% of plastic isn’t recycled? Billions of tons of plastic have been made over the past decades, and much of it is becoming trash and litter” – says Laura Parker of National Geographic. It’s easy to notice the impact every spring when the snow drifts melt, leaving behind trash that accumulated over the long winter. Brew City Marketing decided to take to the streets and participate in the #TrashTag Challenge, a viral social media trend that challenges people to clean up their communities in an effort to combat the planet’s plastic issue.

We had such a great time getting out in our community and picking up trash along the Menomonee River in Wauwatosa. What’s better than enjoying some fresh spring air while helping the environment? We ended up collecting multiple bags of garbage including plastic bottles, chip bags, and even Christmas lights. Getting out into the local neighborhood and cleaning up space you enjoy every day is a refreshing feeling that everyone should try.

#TrashTag Challenge Origin

The challenge became popular after a Reddit post challenged individuals to “make the world a better place.” But the idea first started in 2015 when outdoors clothing company UCO launched the #TrashTag Project. The goal of the #TrashTag Challenge is to raise awareness for the growing plastic problem we face. The challenge is a unique viral trend since it’s not directly associated to a single organization like the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that raised over $115 million for the ALS Association, but rather the greater good of Mother Earth. If you’re looking for a great way to make an impact on your local community, the #TrashTag Challenge is an excellent place to start.
